Ellendale, Tasmania, Australia

Ellendale is a pretty little village with two churches, a picnic area with playground and tennis court and a well stocked shop with post office. It is an hour and a half drive from Hobart through New Norfolk and the picturesque Derwent River Valley.

Mt Field National Park

Mt Field National Park is one of Tasmania’s oldest and most popular national parks. Sassafras Springs makes the ideal place for a base to explore the park and its many walking tracks.

Maydena Bike Park

One of the premier mountain bike parks in the country with 85+ trails to explore. Maydena regularly hosts world class biking events and is a short drive from Sassafras Springs. 

Trout fishing & relaxation on Lake Meadowbank

Lake Meadowbank with its calm water and the bubbling Tyenna River are both 15 minutes drive from Sassafras Springs.

Both are good places to try your skill and luck.

Lawrenny Estate Distillery 

Lawrenny Estate gin and whisky  distillery is a 20 minute drive from Sassafras Springs. Drop in for a tasting or to buy a bottle of your favourite award winning spirit. 

Curringa Farm

Curringa Farm offers farm tours and sheep shearing and handling demonstrations on a beautiful farm near Hamillton on the shores of Lake Meadowbank

Agrarian Kitchen

The Agrarian Kitchen is a delight of a Cooking School, kiosk and restaurant situated in nearby New Norfolk. Check their scheduled classes and spend an enjoyable and instructive day with hosts Rodney Dunn and Severine Demanet.

Possum Shed

A great little cafe at Westerway overlooking the rushing Tyenna River. Delicious home made food and fresh coffee. Call in on your way home from Maydena or the Mt Field National Park.

Antique Shops

New Norfolk, our nearest town is renowned for its antique shops. Browse the treasure troves of everything from Art Deco, nick nacks, and dust collectors to fine classic antiques. Then enjoy a fresh brew and home made goodies at the “Patchwork Cafe” at Willow Court.

Gordon Dam

Take the spectacularly scenic Gordon River Road all the way to Strathgordon. The road winds its way through the thundering Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park with incredible views of mountains beyond and deep gorges below. Just 12 km past Strathgordon sits the astounding Gordon Dam holding back the river of the same name. 

Junee Caves

The Junee Caves near Maydena offer a pleasant walk along the riverbank to the mouth of the caves.

Golf

“Ratho” at Bothwell is the oldest golf course in Australia and may arguably be the first golf course built outside the UK.

Test your skill at teeing off over a flock of sheep and enjoy the informal atmosphere and the uncrowded unhurried pace of a country course.

Bothwell is a 45 minute drive from Sassafras Springs and is also home to the Australasian Golf Museum. a showcase for the history of golfing equipment and Australian golfing champions.
