Activities & Things to Do

Enjoy rainforest walks by the bubbling Sassafras Creek or relax and enjoy our organic farm free from the stresses of city life. Most of the property is covered with beautiful temperate rainforest with a proliferation of sassafras, myrtle, ferns, moss, and the world’s tallest flowering tree – the eucalyptus regnans.

Little people might enjoy the Playground and an Art and Story Hut might entice  your creative side. We endeavour at all times to maintain our accommodation, gardens and property as non-toxic and chemical free as possible.

Native Animals

We have the perfect environment for many native Australian animals. Wallabies, Possums, Echidnas, Platypus, Lizards, Quoll and an occasional Tasmanian Devil.

Birdwatching

Birdwatching is a joy when birds are discovered in their natural settings. There are plenty to spot especially around the gardens in farmhouse area.

Spotlighting

Many of our animals are easily viewed at dusk as they thud off down the road or up the hills behind the cottages.Don’t be surprised by the Bennetts wallabies and the possums who consider our garden as an all-you-can-eat buffet and graze through the evening. Nocturnal animals can be discovered in the spotlights if you venture down the road or the tracks after dark.

Farm Animals

Many Tasmanians fondly remember their childhood visits to Sassafras Springs when it was known as “Old Macdonald’s Farm” at Ellendale.

Our Vegetable Garden

Although most of the property is rainforest the cleared area has been farmed for both hops and raspberries in the past and now features an organic vegetable garden growing seasonal vegetables and herbs for  our guests to use.

The organic orchard includes apples, peaches, plums, blueberries and raspberries. What will be in season for you to pick?

BBQs & Picnics

We also have some special places for you to enjoy picnics and BBQs on site. The picnic shed is set in a garden in the midst of the cottages and is equipped with 2 tables, gas BBQ and a sink and picnic tables are placed at scenic places around the property for your convenience.

Walks

Walkers will love Sassafras Springs – there is a 2.5km creek and rainforest walk on the property as well as being a short drive to the Mt Field National Park area.

Euclyptus Regnans, the tallest flowering tree in the world, Sassafras, Myrtle, Blackwoods, Ferns, Mosses and Fungi abound in our forest.

And after all that stimulation and exercise return to Sassafras Springs and enjoy a steaming mug of coffee.

The Art Studio & Story Hut

Mount FieLD & Mount Mawson Skiing

Mount Mawson is located within the Mount Field National Park about 1½ hours drive from Hobart in southern Tasmania.

The ski areas are at an altitude of about 1250m and the area usually gets fairly consistent snow falls during winter resulting in sufficient cover for downhill skiing from mid July to mid September.

Mount Mawson is a small club field operated by the Southern Tasmanian Ski Association (STSA), located thirty minutes walk from its carpark.

Mawson has three lifts: two intermediate rope tows and a third steep incline rope tow accessing steep terrain.
